Parents of Teen Identified as Unlicensed Driver in Traffic Accident Request 'Reinvestigation'
Friends say "A-gun, who was in a coma, was driving"
Parents say "He sat in the passenger seat, so why is the driver more injured?"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] In Gwangju, the parents of a teenager who sustained the most serious injuries in a traffic accident caused by one of several unlicensed teenage drivers have requested a reinvestigation, expressing disbelief at the police investigation results.
The accident occurred when the opposing vehicle collided with the passenger side next to the driver’s seat, and the teenager who fell into a coma was identified as the driver.
According to the Gwangju Metropolitan Police Agency and Seobu Police Station on the 24th, at around 4:20 a.m. on June 20, a passenger car carrying five teenagers including A (18) crossed the center line in Pungam-dong, Seo-gu, Gwangju, and collided with an oncoming vehicle in a four-lane road.
The vehicle carrying A and others was struck on the passenger side.
As a result of the accident, only A suffered a severe head injury and underwent emergency surgery but remains unconscious to this day.
When 119 emergency services and police arrived at the scene after the accident, there was no one in the driver’s seat of the passenger car, and the passengers testified that they had pulled A out of the driver’s seat and laid him down.
However, A’s family, who was identified as the driver, recently submitted an “objection to the investigation.”
The reason is that if the passenger side was hit, it would be common sense that the person sitting in the passenger seat would have sustained the most serious injuries, so why is only the driver in a coma?
A’s parents said, “Considering the injured areas of our son and the damage to the accident vehicle comprehensively, it is obvious to anyone that our son was not in the driver’s seat, so we requested a reinvestigation.”
The police conducted investigations, including requesting an expert opinion from the National Forensic Service to identify the driver of the accident vehicle, but since there is no other evidence that A did not drive, they are judging based on the testimonies of the passengers that A was the driver.
A traffic department official at a police station said, “Although I am not the investigator in charge and this may be a premature judgment, based on my experience and considering photos of the accident vehicle, it seems the driver was not seriously injured,” adding, “Of course, there are variables.”
