[Asia Economy (Suwon) = Reporter Lee Young-gyu] Noise measurement to compensate for noise damage to residents near Suwon Air Base will be conducted within this month.
On the 20th, Suwon City, Gyeonggi Province announced that the Ministry of National Defense will conduct the "1st noise measurement for the Suwon Air Base noise impact survey" at 10 locations for 7 days from the 21st to the 27th of this month.
The measurement target areas were finally selected at the noise impact survey briefing session held in August with experts and resident representatives participating, including ▲ Anryong Elementary School (Gokbanjeong-dong) ▲ Shopping area in front of Miyeong Apartment (Seryu-dong) ▲ Pyeonghwa Housing (Pyeong-dong) ▲ Seoho Elementary School (Seodun-dong) ▲ Tapdong Elementary School (Tapdong) ▲ Samhwan Apartment Building 15 (Guun-dong) ▲ Geosan Apartment Building 102 (Geumgok-dong) ▲ Homaesil GS Apartment Building 115 (Homaesil-dong) ▲ Gohyeon Elementary School (Gosaek-dong) ▲ Suwon Gwonsun Kkum-e Green Building 110 (Omokcheon-dong).
This noise measurement is conducted in accordance with the "Act on Prevention of Noise and Compensation for Damage from Military Airfields and Military Shooting Ranges." It follows the military airfield noise impact survey regulations.
Continuous 24-hour measurements and recordings are made at heights of 1.2 to 1.5 meters from the ground or floor surface at each point, and aircraft noise measurements, number of aircraft operations, training details, and special noises such as those from parking areas at the measurement points are recorded.
Suwon City especially selected the measurement period considering the annual training schedule of the military airfield, flight conditions, and weather conditions such as wind direction, during which four days of night flight training are scheduled.
They are also guiding so that local residents can participate in all processes.
The noise measurement results will be used as the basis for designating and announcing noise control areas in the future and for compensating military noise damage based on this.
The noise measurement results from the first measurement this time and the second measurement results from February to April next year will be analyzed and verified together, and the noise control area will be designated and announced in December 2021, after which affected residents will receive compensation starting in 2022.
In particular, since the enforcement of the relevant law, residents can receive compensation without filing lawsuits.

A city official promised, "We will actively involve resident representatives and experts in the noise impact survey to proceed fairly and transparently," and added, "We will make every effort to ensure that an accurate investigation of noise-affected areas is conducted so that local residents can receive fair compensation for military noise damage."
