Gwangju Dong-gu Selected for Urban Regeneration New Deal Project for '3 Consecutive Years'
Sansudong 'Kko(kot)Dume, Creating a Fragrant and Happy Village'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Im Taek) announced on the 17th that the Sansu-dong project "Kko(kot) Dume, Creating a Fragrant and Happy Village" has been selected for the third consecutive year in the 2020 Urban Regeneration New Deal Project (recognized project) hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.
With this, Dong-gu will be able to lay the foundation for improving residential conditions and revitalizing the old downtown area along with the already selected and ongoing New Deal projects: the residential support type (Dongmyeong-dong, 20 billion KRW) and the central downtown type (Seonam-dong, 30 billion KRW).
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport selected the first round of new Urban Regeneration New Deal projects this year after a three-month application period, conducting document and on-site evaluations of local governments, and deliberations by the Urban Regeneration Special Committee under the Prime Minister.
A total of 23 sites were selected, including 8 comprehensive projects and 15 recognized projects including Dong-gu, which will secure 5 billion KRW in urban regeneration project funds over the next three years.
"Kko(kot) Dume, Creating a Fragrant and Happy Village" centers on constructing a complex community center by investing 5 billion KRW, including 2.4 billion KRW in national funds, to redevelop a dangerous building that collapsed during construction and had been abandoned for several years.
Dong-gu plans to renovate the collapsed building in the Sansu-dong area, which harms the urban landscape and threatens residents' safety, and establish a complex community center as a village anchor facility.
Specifically, it will be composed of ▲ "Village Sarangchae," a space for residents' communication and sharing, ▲ "Health Promotion Center" to improve welfare for the elderly population, and ▲ "Flower Healing Space," serving as a resting place for residents.
Along with this, through continuous resident capacity building such as restoring the village community linked with local resources, operating programs in cooperation with nearby schools, and developing specialized products through cooperative formation, a "village community self-reliance foundation" will be established.
