Government to Provide $300,000 Humanitarian Aid to Sudan for Flood Damage
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The government announced on the 17th through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs that it will provide humanitarian aid worth 300,000 USD to Sudan, which suffered large-scale flood damage due to continuous heavy rains since mid-July.
The heavy rains caused damage in 17 out of Sudan's total 18 states. As of the 6th, the death toll reached 99, and the number of displaced persons exceeded 500,000. Approximately 100,000 houses were also destroyed.
The government plans to provide relief supplies such as water purification tablets and blankets, and support overall emergency relief activities including food, drinking water, and evacuation assistance through the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA).
Earlier, in June, Lee Tae-ho, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed at the Sudan Partnership Conference the intention to provide support worth a total of 7.5 million USD in 2020 to support Sudan's transitional government's democratization and economic reforms, as well as Sudan's response to COVID-19 and socio-economic development.
