This business agreement was made following a request from Daejeon Metropolitan City for the participation of the Convenience Store Industry Association and its member companies in a project aimed at eradicating child abuse. It was realized through the active participation of five member companies (GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, Ministop, and C Space).
Approximately 1,000 member convenience stores located in Daejeon participating in the ‘Child Abuse Prevention Leading City’ will be responsible for conducting child abuse prevention campaigns, reporting cases of abused children to the local police precinct, and handing over the abused children to the police.
Daejeon Metropolitan City will provide overall administrative support related to child abuse, while participating institutions including the Office of Education will be responsible for child abuse-related education, monitoring, abuse reporting and on-site investigation, and media publicity campaigns.
At the signing ceremony held at Daejeon City Hall, only representatives from the eight agreement institutions attended due to strengthened social distancing measures, including Korea Convenience Store Industry Association Chairman Kyungho Choi, Daejeon Mayor Huh Tae-jung, Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education Superintendent Seol Dong-ho, and Daejeon Metropolitan Police Agency Chief Lee Gyu-moon.
Korea Convenience Store Industry Association Chairman Kyungho Choi said, “We consider it meaningful that the convenience store industry is participating alongside various institutions in Daejeon Metropolitan City’s initiative to create a ‘Child Abuse Zero City’ to eradicate child abuse,” and emphasized, “It is essential to spread social awareness that child abuse is a serious crime, not corporal punishment for discipline.”
Chairman Choi also stated, “The convenience store industry will actively perform its role and functions to contribute to the eradication of child abuse by preventing and protecting children, who are our future, from abuse.”
