Seoul City to Use 'ZeroPay QR Code' for Electronic Entry Log Starting from the 18th
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The Seoul Metropolitan Government will allow the use of ZeroPay QR codes instead of handwritten logs used in restaurants or businesses for COVID-19 quarantine management.
Seoul announced on the 16th that from the 18th, entry authentication will be possible through ZeroPay QR codes installed at each store.
Previously, quarantine authorities judged that confirming the movement paths of those subject to testing and conducting rapid and accurate tests were crucial to prevent the spread of COVID-19, and introduced an electronic entry log based on QR codes starting in June.
However, since a separate terminal device had to be installed to recognize QR codes, there were inconveniences in usage, and many businesses continued to use handwritten logs. Unlike the encrypted QR code method, handwritten logs, where personal information is written directly on paper, record multiple visitors' information on one sheet, raising concerns about personal information exposure.
Accordingly, Seoul added the ZeroPay QR codes, already installed throughout the city, to be used alongside QR code authentication via Naver and KakaoTalk, which are currently used as electronic entry logs. Store owners do not need to install separate terminals for entry authentication; scanning the store’s ZeroPay QR code automatically authenticates entry.
The personal information collected in this way will be used for epidemiological investigations in case of confirmed cases, managed securely, and automatically destroyed after four weeks.
Currently, there are about 260,000 ZeroPay affiliated stores in Seoul alone, and 62 nationwide.
