[Kim Maengnyoung's Golf English Conversation] "A Wife Obsessed with Golf is a Golf Widow"
'Golf Widow'.
This term satirically refers to a wife whose husband is so obsessed with golf that she is left alone at home, feeling lonely and isolated. In short, these are women who have lost their husbands to golf. Golf is known for being an activity that, once started, is difficult to give up.
Interestingly, one psychiatrist described golf as "an addictive drug that clouds one's judgment" (Golf can be an addiction just like drugs). A Scottish golf widow once left a will saying, "When I die, bury me on the golf course so my husband will visit." In contrast, Scottish golfers claim, "Golf is an escape from life or wife."
British golf commentator George Houghton drew attention in 1961 when he published a book titled I Am a Golf Widow. The book describes the hardships faced by wives whose husbands are addicted to golf. It includes lines such as, "My husband is married to golf. He is an obsessive golfer. His madness is incurable, I'm divorced."
Wife A: I'm a golf widow. Because my husband is a real golfaholic. He plays every Saturday, Sunday, and even holidays. He doesn't even care about spending time with his family.
Wife B: That's a shame. My husband is also very enthusiastic about golf.
Wife A: They are both crazy about golf.
