Government Provides Adoption Fee Support for Adopting Stray Animals
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs announced on the 15th that it will provide adoption fee support to people who adopt abandoned animals to promote respect for life and the proper culture of pet adoption.
This initiative aims to activate adoption by supporting the costs incurred when adopting abandoned animals, considering that the number of abandoned animals increases every year while the adoption rate remains stagnant. The number of abandoned animals surged from 90,000 in 2016 to about 136,000 last year. However, during the same period, the number of adoptions only increased from 27,000 to 36,000.
Anyone who adopts an abandoned animal protected at an animal protection center designated by each local government can apply to the relevant city, county, or district office. After receiving an adoption certificate from the animal protection center and completing animal registration, applicants must fill out an adoption fee claim form and apply within six months after adoption to the animal protection center or the relevant city, county, or district office where the animal protection center is located.

The support items include embedded animal registration fees, grooming fees, etc., and applicants can receive up to 100,000 KRW per animal by attaching the relevant receipts. If the adopter spends more than 200,000 KRW on supported items, the government supports 100,000 KRW. Depending on the conditions of the local government, the support amount may be increased, so applicants should check the exact support amount with the relevant city, county, or district office. Detailed information regarding the adoption of abandoned animals and adoption fee support can be additionally confirmed through the Animal Protection Management System.
