Joint Research with SMEs to 'Train Experts'
7 Projects Selected for Ministry of SMEs and Startups R&D Program
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju University (President Kim Hyukjong) is actively stepping up to assist local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in technology development and to cultivate customized talent required by companies.
The Gwangju University Industry-Academic Cooperation Foundation's SME Industry-Academic Cooperation Center announced on the 14th that seven projects were selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' 'SME Technology Development Support Project.'
As a result, joint research with local companies will be conducted until June 2022.
Through this project selection, Gwangju University plans to inject research personnel such as professors and students into SMEs to promote industry-academic cooperation and accelerate the cultivation of specialized personnel needed by companies.
The projects selected for the Ministry of SMEs and Startups' program fall into three categories: Regional Specialized Industry Promotion (R&D) Project, Industry-Academic-Research Collabo R&D Project, and Startup Growth Technology Development Project, receiving a total of 2.2 billion KRW in funding.
The 'Regional Specialized Industry Promotion (R&D) Project' supports new product technology development for key industries in non-metropolitan cities and provinces and regional star companies.
The 'Industry-Academic-Research Collabo R&D Project' supports collaborative R&D for SMEs that have difficulty securing research personnel by utilizing university manpower, technology, and equipment. The 'Startup Growth Technology Development Project' supports technology development for tech startup companies that need to verify the marketability, technicality, and business feasibility of their technology startup items.
The projects selected under the 'Regional Specialized Industry Promotion (R&D) Project' include ▲Development of allergy-reducing cockle ultra-pickled and HMR convenience food products (Professor Jeong Mija, Department of Food and Nutrition) ▲Development of natural seasoning materials fermented with lactic acid bacteria using Jeonnam specialty mushrooms (Professor Kim Giman, Department of Food Biotechnology) ▲Development of composite molding and automation process technology for cooling water transfer pipes for internal combustion engines (Professor Eom Sangin, Department of IT Automotive Engineering).
Additionally, the 'Industry-Academic-Research Collabo R&D Project' includes ▲Bare plastic optical fiber connectable optical transceiver module platform (Professor Yoon Hyunjae, Department of Health Administration) ▲Development of a solar power generation efficiency improvement system through interworking of a smart junction box with quick cutoff function and an inverter without MPPT function (Professor Kim Jeonggeun, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering) ▲Screening and raw materialization of natural iron materials using agricultural and marine products (Professor Kim Seung, Department of Food Biotechnology). The 'Startup Growth Technology Development Project' selected the project ▲Development of elderly-friendly nutritional shake to improve low body weight and muscle loss using agricultural products (Professor Kim Seung, Department of Food Biotechnology).

Kim Seung, head of the Gwangju University SME Industry-Academic Cooperation Center, said, "We will actively support creating research results that can help SMEs through industry-academic cooperation between SMEs and universities."
