US Time Magazine, 200,000 COVID Deaths Mark First Black Cover Since 9/11... "America's Failure"
[Asia Economy Reporter Song Seung-yoon] The American news magazine Time printed the cover of its latest issue in black. Reflecting the current situation in the United States, where the number of deaths from the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) is approaching 200,000, the number "200,000" was also included. Below, in small letters, the phrase "America's Failure" was printed.
On the 12th (local time), the background of the latest issue (dated September 21) cover, released on Time's website, featured a handwritten graph showing the daily death toll in the U.S. from February 29, when the first death occurred, to the 8th, based on data from Johns Hopkins University's COVID-19 death count. In the center of the cover, the number "200,000" was printed in white letters, along with the phrase "America's Failure" in small letters.
Time decorated the border of this cover in black for the second time, after the first time was immediately following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, when the usual red border was replaced with black.
John Murbrudis, who was responsible for the cover art of the latest issue, explained, "I hope this cover will draw the attention of those who have become desensitized to this disaster," adding, "Science and common sense are the solutions to this crisis."
