In this election, the Asia-Pacific regional group competed for one committee member seat between South Korea and India. South Korea was elected as a committee member by receiving support from 80 out of 146 countries that voted, out of a total of 178 States Parties present.
This is the third time South Korea has been elected as a committee member, following its first election for the 2008?2012 term. The UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage is the intergovernmental committee that makes final decisions on the inscription of intangible cultural heritage on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. With this committee membership, South Korea can actively participate in key discussions and decisions, including the inscription of intangible cultural heritage and international cooperation related to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.
