Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education Hosts '2020 Online Jeonnam Science Festival'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Jun-kyung] Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced on the 10th that it will jointly hold the ‘2020 Online Jeonnam Science Festival’ with Jeonnam Province for three weeks starting from the 21st.
This event, under the theme “A Fun Science Journey for Everyone,” is hosted by the Jeonnam regional science teachers’ research group ‘People Who Love Science,’ and supported by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, with a total of 1,110 teams, 3,156 kits, and about 13,682 participants expected.
Also, in response to the COVID-19 situation, it will be conducted in a hybrid online and offline format, showcasing a new normal in experiential education.
The event built an online platform where teachers upload science exploration videos they created on the website, allowing students to apply for programs they want to participate in and directly create and experience them in classrooms or at home.
To support this, the Office of Education plans to provide ‘exploration kits’ by type so that students can explore in family or small groups and upload their results back to the website.
The science experience programs are divided into themes such as ▲Fun Yard ▲Wonder Yard ▲Creative Yard, considering students’ levels and interests, and students upload the results of their activities by family, class, or club through the participation yard.
In particular, the Science Creativity UCC Contest and Science Talk Presentation Contest are held online, enabling various exploration experiences and online creative activities in individual students’ areas of interest.
Additionally, an online nationwide science teachers’ exchange meeting will be held with participation from science teachers from other cities and provinces such as Seoul, Busan, Incheon, Gangwon, Gyeongbuk, Sejong, and Jeju, along with a research group of elementary and secondary science teachers affiliated with the Office of Education.
The Office of Education evaluated that this online science festival, conducted in a hybrid online and offline format for the first time nationwide, will become an opportunity for Jeonnam education to emerge as a new hope in the ‘post-COVID-19 era.’
Meanwhile, as part of the project to promote STEM advancement for island areas of Jeonnam and female students, the WISET project team of Mokpo National University, which has participated in the science festival every year, will participate in this festival with the ‘Making a New Marine Bridge Model’ program of Blue Economy Jeonnam.
