Jeongeup-si Promotes Pilot Project for Long-term Storage Technology of Corn Silage
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Jae-gil] Jeongeup City in Jeonbuk announced on the 8th that it will promote a pilot project for the long-term storage technology dissemination of corn silage cultivated in rice paddies to reduce feed costs by replacing mixed feed and strengthen the competitiveness of livestock farms.
This year's pilot project will cultivate 10 hectares of feed corn, Gwangpyeongok, with a harvest of over 50 tons per hectare.
By cultivating feed corn instead of rice in paddies, it is possible to regulate rice supply and demand while producing high-quality forage, which is expected to have the effect of replacing imported forage.
Also, compared to cultivation in fields, it suffers less from drought damage, resulting in better yield and quality, and it has the advantage of becoming a new income crop for crop farming households as a rice substitute crop.
Corn is the most favored summer forage crop among livestock farmers.
It has excellent feed value, high yield, and high sugar content, making it suitable for making silage.
However, there are problems such as contamination of livestock feed and difficulty in long-term storage due to mold diseases and toxins occurring during corn harvest.
Accordingly, to prevent deformation and spoilage during silage production, a lactic acid bacteria strain with excellent lactic acid production ability and mold inhibition ability developed by the Animal Science Institute is inoculated.
With this pilot project as an opportunity, it is expected to greatly contribute to improving the self-sufficiency rate of forage by promoting quality improvement through the production of high-quality corn silage and safe storage.

The Director of Resource Development said, “Crop farming households will be able to regulate rice supply and demand through the stable expansion of rice substitute forage crop cultivation, and livestock farmers are expected to contribute to the overall farm income by strengthening farm competitiveness through feed cost reduction.”
