Prime Minister Jeong Discusses Extension of Social Distancing and Adjustment of Quarantine Rules... Asks for Patience Again (Update)
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun said on the 4th, "In today's meeting, we will discuss the extension of social distancing nationwide, including the metropolitan area, which ends on the 6th, and the adjustment plan for quarantine rules," adding, "I am deeply sorry for the difficulties faced by the common people and the inconveniences in daily life, but we must tighten the reins now and enter a definite downward trend to avoid greater suffering. I once again ask for the understanding and patience of the people."
At the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) meeting held at the Government Seoul Office on the same day, Prime Minister Chung stated, "Although the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has somewhat decreased recently, we have not yet entered a definite stable phase."
He pointed out, "There have been quite a few cases of young people who have recovered from COVID-19 complaining of aftereffects such as chronic fatigue, chest pain, and difficulty breathing," and added, "However, it seems that the young generation's vigilance has loosened because the COVID-19 mortality rate is low among them and many cases are asymptomatic or mild, which is very concerning."
He continued, "We must keep in mind that one's infection can cause tremendous pain and damage to precious family and community," and urged, "Young people should always remain alert and make wearing masks and other quarantine rules a part of their daily lives."
Prime Minister Chung mentioned, "After long negotiations between the government, ruling party, and the Korean Medical Association, a dramatic compromise was reached," and said, "We expect that the agreement will be signed today and that the residents who had left the medical field for over two weeks will soon return."
He added, "Although it was quite late, I am relieved that hospitals can regain stability if they return to the patients suffering now," and expressed, "The government will also take appropriate measures accordingly."
