Selected as an Excellent Institution in the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family Evaluation, Minister's Commendation
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) has been selected as an 'Excellent Institution for Promoting Gender Impact Assessment in 2020' and will receive a commendation from the Minister of Gender Equality and Family.
Gender Impact Assessment is a system that comprehensively evaluates the impact on gender and factors causing gender discrimination during the process of establishing and implementing major policies, and contributes to realizing gender equality by making reasonable improvements. It is essential when promoting policy projects closely related to residents' lives.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family rewards institutions and individuals who have contributed to revitalizing the Gender Impact Assessment system to create an opportunity to spread gender-equal policies. They comprehensively evaluate the performance of gender impact assessments, degree of system improvement, gender evaluation education, and institutionalization level based on the previous year's laws and projects to select excellent institutions.
This year's Gender Impact Assessment evaluated 305 institutions including basic and metropolitan local governments, government agencies, and education offices. Yangcheon-gu was selected as an excellent institution along with Donghae-si in Gangwon-do and Suwon-si in Gyeonggi-do.
Yangcheon-gu conducts gender impact assessment analysis on about 100 autonomous regulations and projects annually, organizes and operates a Gender Impact Assessment Committee, and strives to spread a culture of gender equality and policies through consulting.
In particular, by operating gender governance composed of residents, public officials, and experts, selecting monitoring projects, deriving policy improvement plans, and reflecting them in policies, Yangcheon-gu realized gender-equal policies that incorporate the voices of beneficiaries, the residents.
Furthermore, by providing gender awareness education to all employees every year, the understanding of gender impact assessment and gender sensitivity is enhanced and reflected throughout the district administration. The district evaluates that it has contributed to the establishment of this system through strengthening employee expertise.
Certified as a Women-Friendly City in December 2017, Yangcheon-gu has implemented projects such as creating a Women's 1-person SS (Singles Safe) Zone for women vulnerable in safety, operating the Newcomer True Love Couple Class, supporting work-family balance, and creating one creative playground per neighborhood to foster a healthy environment for women and families.
These contributions to improving gender-discriminatory elements and creating a safe and happy local environment for families were recognized, leading to the selection as an excellent institution for Gender Impact Assessment.
