Creating a Beautiful Street in Incheon Namdong Industrial Complex... Environmental Improvements Around Nearby Subway Stations
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The area surrounding the 36-year-old Namdong Industrial Complex in Incheon will be transformed into a beautiful street through environmental improvements.
Incheon City announced on the 1st that the Namdong Industrial Complex in Incheon has been selected as the target site for the "2020 Vibrant and Beautiful Street Creation Project," promoted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy as part of the Green New Deal initiative.
The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy held a nationwide competition targeting innovative industrial complexes and youth-friendly complexes, ultimately selecting five local governments including Incheon City as project sites for this year.
Following the selection of the Juan Industrial Complex last year, Incheon City has been chosen as a project site for two consecutive years, enabling continuous efforts to improve the pleasant environment and working conditions within local industrial complexes.
Over the next two years, the city plans to invest a total of 2 billion KRW, including 1 billion KRW in national funds, in a 0.9 km section of the Namdong National Industrial Complex to improve the environment around two subway stations within the complex: Namdong Induspark Station and Hogupo Station.
Established in 1985, the Namdong Industrial Complex played a pivotal role as a driving force behind Korea's industrialization and manufacturing success. However, due to aging facilities and poor working conditions, the complex has been experiencing worsening small-scale operations, with declining employment rates and productivity each year.
Through the Beautiful Street Creation Project, the city aims to shed the image of an aging industrial complex and transform it into an industrial environment where people want to work, expecting to attract young workers.
An official from Incheon City stated, "This project will not only improve the industrial complex environment but ultimately help address Incheon's employment issues. We plan to continue investing in the improvement of industrial complex environments."
Meanwhile, to improve the environment of aging local industrial facilities, Incheon City amended related ordinances last year and established the Environmental Design Center within Incheon Technopark.
