Jeonnam Province Confirms Emergency Disaster Relief Fund as Catalyst for Local Economy
Analysis of Statistics Korea Data Shows Clear Increase in Domestic Consumption
[Muan=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] Emergency disaster relief funds in the Jeonnam region have been shown to have a positive effect on revitalizing the local economy.
It is evaluated that the funds acted as a catalyst for regional economic recovery by leading to increased sales for struggling small business owners and boosting domestic consumption.
According to Jeonnam Province on the 1st, an analysis of economic trend data recently released by Statistics Korea showed that although the service industry production index in Jeonnam, including lodging and restaurants, slightly decreased, the retail sales index was 110.6, a 10.2% increase compared to the same quarter last year.
It was also confirmed that sales of passenger cars, fuel retail stores, supermarkets, and convenience stores increased.
In response to the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic triggered in January and the spread of infectious diseases within the province, Jeonnam Province provided emergency disaster relief funds totaling 537.6 billion KRW from national and local budgets (province, city, and county) to 877,000 households.
The payment types included 90.7 billion KRW in cash to 196,927 households, 271.8 billion KRW via credit and debit cards to 405,401 households, 33.1 billion KRW in prepaid cards to 51,459 households, and 130.7 billion KRW in gift certificates to 200,137 households.
Since May, the province has formed and operated an emergency disaster relief fund task force led by the Director of the Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Administration Bureau to ensure swift and accurate payment and guidance of the relief funds.
Each city and county opened dedicated counters for the emergency disaster relief funds at town and village community centers to promptly distribute the funds, enhancing administrative continuity and trust.
In particular, to assist disabled and elderly residents with mobility difficulties who might not be able to apply for the relief funds in time, public officials provided direct visiting administrative services, contributing to the prompt support of the disaster relief funds.
Jung Chan-gyun, Director of the Jeonnam Provincial Autonomous Administration Bureau, said, “We hope this emergency disaster relief fund support has greatly helped small business owners and the regional economic recovery. As the domestic economic slump due to COVID-19 continues, we will do our best to stabilize residents’ lives and revitalize the local economy.”
