Gangdong-gu, GTX-D Line Attraction Petition Surpasses 100,000 Signatures
Delivering 100,000 Resident Signatures and GTX-D Route Proposal Passing Gangdong-gu to Seoul City and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Reflecting Residents' Wishes for GTX-D Connecting Western Seoul Metropolitan Area to Gangdong and Hanam
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Gangdong-gu (District Mayor Lee Jeong-hoon) announced that the resident signature campaign for the introduction of the GTX (Greater Seoul Metropolitan Area Express Train) Line D, connecting the western metropolitan area to Gangdong-gu and Hanam-si, has surpassed 100,000 signatures.
GTX is a project that connects the outskirts of the metropolitan area to major hubs in downtown Seoul within 30 minutes, aiming to alleviate severe traffic congestion in the metropolitan area and improve convenience for long-distance commuters.
Since the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s Metropolitan Transportation Committee announced the ‘Review of New Western Lines’ in the ‘Metropolitan Transportation Vision 2030’ last October, Gangdong-gu has actively pursued the introduction of GTX-D.
If GTX-D passes through Gangdong-gu, travel to the Gangnam area will take about 10 minutes, and major metropolitan hubs will be accessible within 30 minutes. This will not only enhance metropolitan transportation convenience and drastically reduce commuting times, improving residents’ quality of life, but also, combined with the extension projects of subway lines 5, 8, and 9 and the opening of the Seoul-Sejong Expressway, will enable Gangdong-gu to emerge as a transportation hub in the eastern metropolitan area.
To attract GTX-D, the district has been continuously promoting an easy and fast online signature campaign using QR codes through district newsletters, the official website, and SNS since March, as well as offline signature campaigns at key locations such as the district office building, all community service centers, and subway stations.
Moreover, on the 5th, a resident briefing session was held to solidify community consensus, and on the 24th, the ‘Gangdong-gu and Hanam-si GTX-D New Line Discussion and Promotion Committee Launch Ceremony’ was held to open the way for joint efforts among civilians, government, and politicians for the establishment of GTX-D.
As a result, in just five months, an astonishing outcome was achieved with more than 100,000 residents, accounting for one-quarter of the total population of Gangdong-gu, participating in the signature campaign.
Alongside the signature campaign, the district has also been conducting a research project to establish the justification for attracting the GTX-D line. The goal is to identify the optimal GTX-D route based on objective data and prove the project’s feasibility through comprehensive analyses of economic viability, financial soundness, and policy aspects.

The district plans to submit the optimal route proposal derived from the research, along with the 100,000 resident signatures, to the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport in early September, and will actively work to ensure that the GTX-D route passing through Gangdong-gu is reflected in the ‘2nd Metropolitan Transportation Basic Plan’ and the ‘4th National Railroad Network Construction Plan.’
Lee Jeong-hoon, Mayor of Gangdong-gu, said, “Through this signature campaign, we were able to confirm the residents’ passionate desire for the introduction of the GTX-D line. In addition to the major transportation network expansion projects currently underway, such as the extension of subway lines 5, 8, and 9 and the Sejong-Pocheon Expressway, we will do our best to provide convenient transportation infrastructure to residents by attracting the GTX-D line to Gangdong.”
