The First Nighttime Unmanned 'Smart Super' Store to Open Next Month
SoginGong, Five Pilot Stores Finally Selected
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Daeseop] The Small Enterprise and Market Service announced on the 31st that it has selected five 'Smart Supermarket Pilot Stores' nationwide and plans to open the first store next month.
The Smart Supermarket Pilot Stores were established to respond to changes in the distribution environment, such as the expansion of non-face-to-face (untact) consumption, aiming to smarten neighborhood supermarkets. It is a hybrid unmanned store model operated by the owner during the day and unmanned at night.
In July, the Small Enterprise and Market Service conducted a public contest targeting nationwide Nadle stores and comprehensively evaluated 26 stores that wished to participate in the project based on nighttime operating hours, nighttime foot traffic, the owner's investment plans and willingness to participate, and characteristics of the surrounding commercial area. The final selections were Hyeongje Super in Dongjak, Seoul; Nadle Store in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul; Green Mart in Anyang, Gyeonggi; Daedong Discount Mart in Nam-gu, Ulsan; and Moa Mart in Chuncheon, Gangwon.
In collaboration with the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Small Enterprise and Market Service will support up to 10 million KRW per store for the introduction of smart technologies necessary for unmanned operation at the selected pilot stores, including smart gates (access authentication devices), unmanned checkout counters, and security systems. The first Smart Supermarket is scheduled to open next month.
Additionally, distribution experts will be deployed to the pilot stores to provide consulting on how to utilize smart technologies, product assortment and marketing techniques tailored to the characteristics of the commercial area. They will also support the smart operation of stores by regularly providing distribution information such as the latest popular product trends and operating mobile ordering and delivery using delivery applications.
Based on the results of the pilot store operations, the Small Enterprise and Market Service plans to develop a Smart Supermarket store model suitable for alleyway commercial districts within this year and sequentially expand Smart Supermarkets nationwide targeting neighborhood supermarkets from next year.

Jo Bonghwan, Director of the Small Enterprise and Market Service, said, "The pilot stores were selected for their long nighttime operating hours and high potential for late-night sales. We expect that unmanned nighttime operation will improve the quality of life for neighborhood supermarket small business owners by reducing working hours and enhance profits through additional nighttime sales."
