Kim Jong-in: "The new party name 'Gukminui Him' is appropriate and aligns with the spirit of the Constitution" (Comprehensive)
Meeting with Representative Lee Nak-yeon Tomorrow... "Lots to Talk About"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hye-min] Kim Jong-in, Emergency Committee Chairman of the United Future Party, said on the 31st that the new party name 'Gukminui Him' (People Power) was chosen as "the most moderate among the candidates" and that "the word 'Gukmin' (People) itself aligns with the spirit of the Constitution."
After the Emergency Committee meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, Kim told reporters, "When we conducted a public opinion poll about the party name, the word that came up the most was 'Gukmin' (People)." The United Future Party's Emergency Committee reached a consensus on 'Gukminui Him' after discussions among three candidate groups. The party name will be finalized at the National Committee meeting on the 2nd of next month after gathering opinions at the parliamentary general meeting held that day.
Regarding the criticism that the new party name is similar to Ahn Cheol-soo's People's Party, he drew a clear line by saying, "The People's Party and Gukminui Him are different." When asked about the fact that parties with 'Gukmin' (People) in their names have often been used in the centrist and progressive camps, he emphasized, "We live in an era where ideology does not exist," and "there is no need to discuss the party name from an ideological perspective."
Kim is scheduled to meet Lee Nak-yeon, the newly elected leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, tomorrow. He said, "We have to meet," and added, "There will be a lot to talk about."
During his remarks at the Emergency Committee meeting that morning, he urged cooperation toward Lee.
Kim said, "Since the beginning of the last National Assembly session, the confrontation between the ruling and opposition parties has caused public displeasure," and added, "I ask the new administration to make efforts to ensure smooth cooperation between the ruling and opposition parties as the regular session approaches."
He emphasized, "Due to various policy failures by the government, public anger has reached its peak. In particular, the failure of real estate policies has triggered enormous anger among the people and is still ongoing. Please keep this in mind," and added, "This is a time when cooperation between the ruling and opposition parties is necessary to overcome the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19)."
Meanwhile, Kim once again expressed concern about conflicts between the government and medical staff and urged for an agreement.
Kim said, "I once again request the government. As the president said, only science can solve COVID-19, and therefore medical workers must solve this," emphasizing, "Above all, it is an important task to create conditions where medical volunteers can devote themselves to overcoming COVID-19 with peace of mind."
