Mayor Lee Yong-seop of Gwangju stated this during an online COVID-19 briefing on the afternoon of the 30th, saying, "As the COVID-19 crisis enters its eighth month, the burden of suffering that ordinary people must bear is growing heavier."
He continued, "Storefronts are firmly closed, and weekend streets have become noticeably deserted. As citizens suspend unnecessary social and economic activities, the local economy has come to a halt," adding, "The more the quarantine response system is strengthened, the more self-employed business owners and small merchants are pushed to the brink."
He also said, "In the first half of this year, the 'Good Rent Reduction Movement' was carried out in cooperation with public institutions at places such as Songjeong Station 1913 Market, Dongmyeong-dong Cafe Street, and Yongbong-dong Fashion Street, providing great strength and courage to tenant merchants," and added, "To protect the Gwangju economic community and share the pain with tenants facing even greater difficulties, I ask landlords to reduce rents. If the local economy collapses and business foundations break down, rental businesses cannot be sustained."
