[Asia Economy New York=Correspondent Baek Jong-min] The United States is expected to reduce the number of U.S. troops stationed in Iraq.
On the 28th (local time), the Wall Street Journal reported, citing senior sources, that the U.S. Department of Defense plans to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Iraq from the current approximately 5,200 to 3,500. The Journal anticipated that the troop reduction would take place within the next 2 to 3 months.
Once the troop reduction is completed, the number of U.S. troops in Iraq will return to the 2015 level, before the rapid expansion of the Islamic militant group Islamic State (IS).
