Gwangju Seo-gu, Operation of Sustainable Development Resident Participation Group
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City (Mayor Seo Daeseok) announced on the 28th that it has begun establishing goals to be achieved by 2030 together with residents for the creation of a sustainable city.
The United Nations (UN) adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals in 2015, including poverty eradication and economic growth, setting development goals that humanity must achieve. South Korea also declared its transition to a sustainable society by establishing national sustainable development goals by 2030 in line with this trend.
Accordingly, Seo-gu is actively working to fulfill its role as a local government and incorporate the values of sustainable development into district administration in accordance with global trends and national policy directions.
First, Seo-gu established a Sustainable Development Team earlier this year and has been taking steps to establish a basic plan for sustainable development in Seo-gu, including operating a task force team with experts and conducting an online survey of about 2,000 residents.
In addition, in June, a Sustainable Development Resident Participation Group consisting of 67 members from various fields such as neighborhood representatives, welfare, environment, and autonomy was recruited and is scheduled to begin full operation next month.
The Resident Participation Group, which will be active for two years until August 2022, will actively participate in diagnosing Seo-gu’s sustainable development, deriving visions, goals, and strategies, as well as participating in the establishment of the basic plan and monitoring the implementation of action plans.
Seo-gu plans to actively support capacity building and communication activation through workshops and reporting sessions to facilitate the smooth activities of the participation group.
