COVID-19 Resurgence Causes Consecutive Movie Release Delays (Comprehensive)
Release Date Changes for 'Mulan', 'New Mutants', and 'Gigguk Goei Seonghyeongsu'
The release of movies has been continuously postponed due to the resurgence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
Distributor Walt Disney Company Korea announced on the 27th that the release date of "Mulan" has been changed from the 10th to the 17th of next month. A representative said, "This decision was made considering the current situation of the renewed spread of COVID-19." The number of new COVID-19 cases in Korea has been over 200 daily since the 17th. Originally, the movie was scheduled to be released on March 27, but its release was postponed several times due to the spread of COVID-19. In North America, the theatrical release was completely abandoned. It will be released on the company's online video streaming service, Disney Plus, on the 4th of next month. "Mulan" is a live-action adaptation of the 1998 animated film of the same name. It tells the story of brave and wise Mulan who hides that she is a woman and becomes a soldier to protect her family and face adversity. The cast includes Liu Yifei, Donnie Yen, Gong Li, and Jet Li.
For the same reason, Walt Disney Company Korea also postponed the release date of "The New Mutants" from the 3rd to the 10th of next month. This movie was originally scheduled to be released in April 2018 but was delayed due to additional filming. The adverse factor of COVID-19 spread further delayed its screening. "The New Mutants" is a new series of "X-Men." It depicts mutant teenagers encountering unbelievable experiences and awakening their abilities. The cast includes Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, and Henry Zaga.

The animation "Gigguk's Plastic Surgery Water," based on a domestic webtoon, also postponed its release on the same day. Distributor Triple Pictures stated, "Due to the social distancing being raised to level 2, we aim to prevent damage and further spread." The revised schedule will be announced later. Directed by Oh Sung-dae, "Gigguk's Plastic Surgery Water" was invited to the Annecy International Animation Festival in France last June. It vividly portrays the process of an ordinary woman in her twenties becoming beautiful by using a mysterious water called "Plastic Surgery Water" that easily helps with plastic surgery. The film attracted attention even before its release by adding strong tension to its chilling and ingenious ideas.
