View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) will operate the '5th Jongno Dasan School,' a program to learn about the practicing intellectual ‘Dasan Jeong Yak-yong’ from September to November.
The district has been running the 'Jongno Dasan School' program since 2016 to reexamine the life and spirit of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, a reformer and philosopher ahead of his time, from a modern perspective, to inherit Dasan’s leadership, and to inform residents of the wisdom and expertise needed to adapt to a rapidly changing society.
The '5th Jongno Dasan School' will be held every Thursday from September 10 to November 19 for a total of 10 sessions, each covering different topics to deeply explore Dasan’s spirit.
The lectures begin with Professor Jin Jae-gyo of Sungkyunkwan University presenting ‘Dasan Jeong Yak-yong’s Renaissance, the Very Human Dasan,’ followed by ▲ Professor Kim Moon-sik of Dankook University with ‘Jeong Yak-yong’s Scholarship and the Han River’ ▲ Professor Choi Jae-mok of Yeungnam University with ‘The 1930s Joseon Studies Movement and the Rediscovery of Jeong Dasan’ ▲ Professor Shin Byung-joo of Konkuk University with ‘Dasan’s Exile Life and Letters Written in Exile.’
Additionally, ▲ Professor Son Sung-joon of Sungkyunkwan University will present ‘Detective Jeong Yak-yong - Dasan in 21st Century Cultural Contents’ ▲ Professor Shim Jae-woo of the Academy of Korean Studies will discuss ‘Legal Scholar Jeong Yak-yong and the "Heumheum Sinseo" - Trials and Punishments in Joseon Society’ ▲ Professor Kim Yong-heum of Yonsei University will cover ‘The Tradition of the Welfare State Seen through "Gyeongse Yupo"’ ▲ Professor Baek Min-jung of Catholic University will lecture on ‘Seong Giho Theory, Dasan Jeong Yak-yong’s View of Humanity and Ethics’ ▲ Professor Ahn Dae-hoe of Sungkyunkwan University will present ‘Appreciation of Dasan Jeong Yak-yong’s Short Essays’ ▲ Professor Han Ki-hyung of Sungkyunkwan University will discuss ‘Why the 20th Century Focused on Dasan’ in sequence.
The 5th Jongno Dasan School was originally scheduled to be held at the Sungkyunkwan University 600th Anniversary Hall, but due to the social distancing level being raised to Level 2 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, it has been converted to online education.
The total number of participants is 100, recruited on a first-come, first-served basis, and the course fee is free.

District Mayor Kim Young-jong stated, “We expect that through Dasan’s life and wisdom, people will learn how to live wisely and happily in the present,” and added, “We will continue to satisfy residents’ learning needs and increase happiness indices through various lifelong learning education programs in diverse fields.”
