United Future Party: "What right do civic groups have to recommend students for the Public Medical School... They must provide a thorough explanation"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] The United Future Party emphasized that the government must thoroughly explain the 'special admission for civic groups' in public health medical universities.
Yoon Hee-seok, deputy spokesperson of the United Future Party, said in a statement on the 26th, "It seems this government truly is a 'civic group government.'"
He pointed out, "Initially, there was public uproar over the announcement that the mayor or governor of each city and province would have the right to recommend new students. How can mayors and governors, whom students have never even met, understand and recommend so many students?" He added, "Moreover, the mayors of Seoul and Busan have stepped down or are under investigation for sexual harassment, and the mayor of Ulsan is under investigation for election fraud, so there is absolutely no trust or qualification for city and provincial governors to recommend students."
Yoon said, "But the Ministry of Health and Welfare's explanation is even more ridiculous. It is not an arbitrary recommendation by mayors and governors, but a recommendation of two to three times the number of candidates by a recommendation committee involving civic groups." He questioned, "Why are civic groups involved here? What are civic groups that they recommend students?"
He criticized, "They have been pursuing their own interests under the guise of citizens. The Moon Jae-in administration, which has ignored the voices of the people angry at their hypocrisy and corruption, has appointed them as ministers and even made them lawmakers. Now, is it not enough that they are trying to grant medical licenses as well?"

Yoon emphasized, "Ideology should not interfere even with life. Which citizen would entrust their body to a doctor who graduated from a medical school selected only through recommendations and interviews and lacks competence?" He added, "No citizen fails to understand the purpose of establishing public health medical universities, so explain in detail why only new students of this university must be selected solely through recommendations and interviews. Thoroughly explain why civic groups must participate in this process."
