Gwangju City Activates Disaster Safety Countermeasures Headquarters in Preparation for Typhoon 'Bavi'
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] Gwangju Metropolitan City has entered an emergency response system in preparation for the northward-moving Typhoon No. 8 "Bavi."
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration's forecast, Gwangju is expected to be in the indirect impact zone, but since this typhoon is accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain, the city announced on the 24th that it is preparing as if it were in the direct impact zone to ensure citizens' safety.
To this end, Gwangju will hold an emergency situation assessment meeting on the morning of the 25th, chaired by the Deputy Mayor, with 13 cooperating departments and directors of 5 autonomous districts attending, to intensively check the response status as if in the direct impact zone of the typhoon.
In addition, from the afternoon of the 25th, the Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters will be activated to work overnight until the typhoon warning is lifted, and cooperation has been requested for the 5 autonomous districts to also activate their countermeasure headquarters.
Although the typhoon is not expected to directly affect the Gwangju area, the city is maintaining vigilance and preparing for any situation as strong winds and heavy rain are forecasted.
In particular, to prepare for strong winds, the city plans to strengthen media publicity on citizen action guidelines to prevent damage such as apartment window breakage and securing building advertisements, and will take preemptive measures to protect vinyl greenhouses from damage.
Special inspections have been conducted on areas damaged during the recent heavy rains, and requests have been made to prevent further damage.
Furthermore, in preparation for heavy rain, the city plans to focus on controlling access to Gwangju Stream, relocating parked vehicles, strengthening vehicle control in underground passages, and implementing flood prevention measures in low-lying habitual flood areas.
