Typhoon Crisis Alert Raised from 'Interest → Caution' ... Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters Activated Today
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] As Typhoon No. 8 'Bavi' moving north is expected to directly affect South Korea, the government is activating the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters (CDSCH) to respond.
On the 24th at 2 p.m., the Ministry of the Interior and Safety held an emergency countermeasure meeting chaired by Minister Jin Young, attended by related ministries and local governments, raising the crisis alert level from 'Interest' to 'Caution' and announced that CDSCH Level 1 will be activated by the evening.
At the meeting, the expected path and impact range of the approaching typhoon were shared, and measures to minimize damage were discussed.
The government especially strengthened safety management of fisheries and port facilities and management of falling objects in preparation for strong winds, and established and operated an emergency restoration team for power outage preparedness, maintaining damage prevention measures and an emergency recovery support system.
Additionally, to prevent repeated damage in areas affected by the recent heavy rains, pre-inspections were ordered, and quarantine measures were reinforced to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in residential and evacuation facilities for disaster victims.
The government plans to gradually raise the CDSCH emergency duty level according to the typhoon situation and dispatch on-site situation managers to support local governments' field response.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Typhoon Bavi is expected to move northward to the sea south of Jeju Island on the 25th, pass west of Jeju Island, move to the West Sea on the 26th, and make landfall in Hwanghae Province on the 27th, passing through inland areas. The closest approach to Jeju Island is expected on the afternoon of the 26th, and the closest approach to Seoul is expected on the morning of the 27th.
