"Let's Reduce 1 Ton of Greenhouse Gas Per Person Per Year Together"

Jongno-gu (District Mayor Kim Young-jong) is promoting the '1·1·1 Lifestyle Practice Movement,' where one person reduces 1 ton of greenhouse gases in one year, to create a sustainable city where people and the environment coexist in response to extreme weather phenomena that have become part of daily life.
The '1·1·1 Lifestyle Practice Movement,' part of the 'Climate Crisis Emergency Action Project' promoted by Jongno-gu, is based on the fact that most greenhouse gases, which are cited as the cause of climate change, are emitted from non-industrial sectors (households, commerce, transportation).
Jongno-gu is located in the city center, densely packed with large buildings and commercial facilities, with many vehicle movements and floating populations, making it an area with large carbon emissions.
However, it also has abundant green spaces such as Inwangsan, Bugaksan, Naksan, and Bukhansan, giving it the geographical advantage of reabsorbing carbon emitted by the city center.
The district decided to promote the 'Climate Action Project' to leverage these characteristics and aim for a 'transition to a low-carbon lifestyle.'
Furthermore, recognizing that resident participation is essential for reducing greenhouse gases, the district rolled up its sleeves to encourage individuals to practice lifestyle rules that can reduce 1 ton of greenhouse gases annually in their daily lives.
Accordingly, this lifestyle practice movement promoted by Jongno-gu aims to reduce 500,000 tons of greenhouse gases by 2025. Considering that about 1.3 million tons of greenhouse gases are emitted annually within the district, if 100,000 people staying in Jongno reduce 1 ton each per year, it is expected to reduce about 10% of the annual emissions.
The district has set seven promotion tasks in two major areas to encourage participation from residents, businesses, and schools.
First, in the 'Participation Foundation Creation' area, the promotion tasks include ▲slogan contest ▲production of promotional materials (posters, leaflets, card news, etc.) ▲web platform construction (within the district office website). In the 'Practice Expansion' area, the tasks include ▲greenhouse gas reduction pledge campaign ▲climate action practice challenge ▲formation and operation of a climate action practice council ▲climate action practice declaration ceremony & forum.
Among these, the first event is the '1·1·1 Lifestyle Practice Movement Slogan Contest,' held from August 24 to midnight on September 6.
Under the theme of 'Creative slogans that can lead participation in the 1·1·1 Movement,' anyone living daily in Jongno can submit up to three entries per person. Slogans written within 25 characters and the application form can be submitted via the Jongno-gu website or by email to the person in charge (tiny1004you@mail.jongno.go.kr).
The winners will be announced in September through posting on the website and individual notification. One grand prize winner will receive a gift certificate worth 300,000 KRW, two excellence award winners will receive gift certificates worth 200,000 KRW each, and among all participants, 15 will be selected by lottery to receive a participation prize of gifticons worth 10,000 KRW.
For more details about the contest, please refer to the district office website or contact the Environment and Sustainable City Team.

Mayor Kim Young-jong said, “Many residents are going through difficult times due to frequent climate changes such as prolonged COVID-19, rainy seasons, and heatwaves. While efforts in the public sector are important to reduce greenhouse gases, which are the main cause of climate change, resident participation is also essential. We hope residents will take great interest in the 1·1·1 Lifestyle Practice Movement, which can pass on a healthy and clean Earth to future generations through practical methods anyone can do in daily life, such as walking or cycling for short distances and using public transportation instead of private cars.”
