Dobong-gu Holds Meeting for Publication of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Textbook
Proceeding with the Production of Sustainable Development Education Materials for Elementary Students Reflecting Dobong-gu Case... District Office, Elementary Teachers, Experts, and Citizens Gather to Establish a Foundation for Public-Private-Academic Collaboration in Sustainable Development Education
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dobong-gu (Mayor Dongjin Lee) held an ‘Expert Roundtable for the Development of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD)’ at the district office on the 19th to discuss opinions and directions for the production of the ‘Dobong ESD Textbook’ with experts linked to Education for Sustainable Development.
Currently, the district has set ‘sustainable development’ as a core operational principle of district administration and is promoting the publication project of the ‘Dobong Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) Textbook’ for elementary school students as a first-year project to root the Sustainable Development Goals in the local community.
The goal is to provide sustainable development education reflecting Dobong-gu’s regional characteristics so that teachers, students, and even citizens can easily understand the Sustainable Development Goals and Education for Sustainable Development and practice them in daily life.
The roundtable served as a pre-stage before school monitoring of the ‘Dobong ESD Textbook’ draft, discussing ▲ the results of a survey on local elementary school teachers’ awareness of sustainable development and ESD ▲ the content composition of each unit for lower and upper grades of the ‘Dobong ESD Textbook’ ▲ and the production direction of the ‘Dobong ESD Textbook’ suitable for the untact era.
Being written through public-private-academic collaboration involving the district office, local elementary school teachers, and a global citizenship education study group, the ‘Dobong ESD Textbook’ is being produced with enhanced completeness based on school curricula, cross-curricular learning processes, and expert opinions. They are striving to move beyond the environmental education focus of existing ESD textbooks to include the Sustainable Development Goals 1 through 17 in a story format.
The ‘Dobong-type ESD Textbook,’ produced with the concept of a ‘pick-and-use textbook,’ will undergo monitoring from September to November. Monitoring of the ‘Dobong ESD Textbook,’ in which students directly participate in textbook production, will be conducted with 14 pilot classes from four regions of Dobong-gu, as well as schools and educational institutions outside the district, together with homeroom teachers and community instructors.
Mayor Dongjin Lee of Dobong-gu said, “Dobong-gu, in its first year as a UN University Education for Sustainable Development hub city (RCE), is developing the ‘Dobong ESD Textbook’ for elementary students through collaboration among the public, private, and academic sectors. At a time when transformative and integrative thinking is essential to secure the lives of future generations, I hope that through the production of the ‘Dobong ESD Textbook,’ Dobong-gu can become a representative hub city for Education for Sustainable Development in Korea.”

In January this year, the district was selected as a hub city for Education for Sustainable Development (RCE) by the UN University. Taking this opportunity, Dobong-gu has set ‘sustainable development’ as a core operational principle of district administration and is striving to become a domestic and international hub for Education for Sustainable Development that aims to create a society where everyone benefits from quality education and learns the values, actions, and lifestyles necessary for a sustainable future and social transformation.
