US Notifies Termination of Three Bilateral Agreements with Hong Kong Including Extradition Treaty
After the Passage of the Hong Kong Security Law, U.S. Pressure Intensifies Increasingly
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] On the 19th (local time), the United States notified Hong Kong that it would terminate three bilateral agreements, including extradition of criminals and taxation.
On the same day, the U.S. announced it would end agreements related to fugitive extradition, transfer of international prisoners, and mutual tax exemption on income from international shipping operations. Morgan Ortagus, spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State, explained, "This is to emphasize our deep concern regarding China's decision to introduce the National Security Law that suppresses the freedoms of Hong Kong citizens."
The U.S. has stated it will impose sanctions, claiming that China took measures to curtail Hong Kong's autonomy after introducing the Hong Kong National Security Law. Earlier, on the 7th, the U.S. announced sanctions against 11 officials from Hong Kong and China, including Carrie Lam, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong.
Additionally, the U.S. has taken steps to reduce preferential treatment and sanction related parties, such as mandating that products made in Hong Kong for export to the U.S. be labeled as made in China starting from September 25.
