Dongseo Power, High-Efficiency Cookstove Distribution Project Registered with UN
Supply of 500,000 Cookstoves to Ghana... 700,000 Tons of Greenhouse Gas Reduction Over 5 Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] Korea East-West Power announced on the 20th that it has registered an overseas Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to distribute high-efficiency cookstoves in Ghana, a developing country in Africa.
The CDM project refers to a project under the UNFCCC Kyoto Protocol where developed countries invest in developing countries to secure greenhouse gas reduction achievements.
High-efficiency cookstoves are cooking devices that primarily use firewood and charcoal as fuel. They are made from materials such as ceramic, metal, and cement. By reducing fuel consumption by more than 20-30%, they decrease carbon dioxide and air pollutants released into the atmosphere. They also shorten cooking time and improve living conditions, contributing to the health and quality of life of residents.
East-West Power has been collaborating with the Climate Change Center since last year to develop the project and conduct feasibility studies. They developed the CDM project plan required for UN registration and held a public hearing with local stakeholders to secure Ghana's approval. Subsequently, the project passed a three-stage review process including evaluation by a UN-designated verification body, the UNFCCC secretariat, and the executive board over approximately six months, receiving final approval on the 12th.
Starting from this UN registration, East-West Power will actively supply 500,000 cookstoves to residents in Ghana. It is expected to reduce about 700,000 tons of greenhouse gases over five years by saving cooking fuel. Additionally, local cookstove production is anticipated to contribute to job creation in the region.
Profits generated from greenhouse gas reduction achievements will be reinvested in reduction projects and used for social contribution activities.
An East-West Power official stated, "East-West Power was recognized last month by the UN as a specialized institution (CTCN) supporting greenhouse gas reduction technologies in developing countries. By utilizing accumulated greenhouse gas reduction technologies and professional personnel, we will develop various reduction projects to contribute to the transition to a low-carbon society in the era of climate crisis."
The Climate Technology Center Network (CTCN) is a specialized technical support institution under the UNFCCC that facilitates technology cooperation related to greenhouse gas reduction and climate change adaptation between developed and developing countries.
