Mapo-gu Operates Outdoor Heat Relief Shelters
Preparing for Heatwaves with 'Our Neighborhood Outdoor Heat Relief Shelters' to Help Vulnerable Groups Survive Summer... Operating 3 Gyms, 16 Community Centers, and 16 Outdoor Shelters as Heat Relief Spots
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Mapo-gu (Mayor Yudonggyun) is operating the ‘Our Neighborhood Outdoor Heat Shelter,’ a space where heat-vulnerable groups can take a break and escape the heat even for a short time.
Following the end of the prolonged rainy season and the start of the full-fledged heatwave, the district has activated the Heatwave Countermeasures Headquarters since the 16th and is implementing various heatwave measures to minimize heat damage.
Among these, regarding the heat shelters, the district initially planned to operate shelters including welfare centers and senior citizen centers so residents could easily use them. However, due to the implementation of social distancing level 2 following the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the original plan was revised, and it was decided to focus on operating only three gymnasiums, sixteen community service centers, and sixteen outdoor heat shelters.
The outdoor heat shelters are designated and operated one per each neighborhood within the district, including ▲(Gongdeok-dong) Malli Reservoir Park ▲(Ahyeon-dong) Ssangryongsan Neighborhood Park ▲(Dohwa-dong) Boksa Flower Children’s Park ▲(Yonggang-dong) Dohwa Small Children’s Park ▲(Daeheung-dong) Our Mapo Welfare Center 2nd Floor ▲(Yeomni-dong) Yeomni Pavilion ▲(Sinsu-dong) Hyunseok Nadeulmok ▲(Seogang-dong) Wau Children’s Park ▲(Seogyo-dong) Seogyo Children’s Park ▲(Hapjeong-dong) Yanghwa Children’s Park ▲(Mangwon 1-dong) Ongdalsem Children’s Park ▲(Mangwon 2-dong) Duri Children’s Park ▲(Yeonnam-dong) Ginkgo Tree Children’s Park ▲(Seongsan 1-dong) Seongsan Neighborhood Park ▲(Seongsan 2-dong) Keungil Children’s Park ▲(Sangam-dong) Hyuam Children’s Park.
The sixteen outdoor heat shelters are managed by volunteers from the Mapo-gu Volunteer Center, who strictly enforce COVID-19 prevention measures such as requiring visitors to wear masks and undergo temperature checks, guiding social distancing among users, and disinfecting within the shelters.
In addition, the district is making every effort to prepare for heatwave damage through activities such as health management for vulnerable groups including elderly living alone, disabled persons, and chronic patients; patrolling construction sites; operating rest time systems at workplaces and construction sites; and sprinkling water on roads using six water trucks.
