Completion of 'Songpa Nanum Power Plant No. 5'
Songpa-gu Expands Energy Welfare Projects Using Solar Power Generation Revenue
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Songpa-gu (Mayor Park Seong-su) will hold the completion ceremony for ‘Songpa Nanum Power Plant No. 5’ on the 20th at the Sincheon Rainwater Pump Station (1 Ogeum-ro, Songpa-gu).
Since 2009, the district has operated four Nanum power plants, using the generated power revenue of 920 million KRW to support energy-vulnerable groups.
Based on the additional completion of this Nanum power plant, the district plans to further expand energy welfare for vulnerable groups.
‘Songpa Nanum Power Plant No. 5’ is a 63 kW-class solar power plant built by installing solar panels on the roof of the Sincheon Rainwater Pump Station. It produces 87.3 MWh of electricity annually, reduces 804 tons of carbon dioxide over 20 years, and is expected to generate approximately 140 million KRW in power revenue.
100% of the profits from electricity sales will be used to support energy-vulnerable groups, assist impoverished countries in the Third World, and build subsequent Nanum power plants. In particular, by producing electricity using sunlight, it plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and respond to climate change. Additionally, installing solar panels on urban building rooftops is excellent for forest preservation and safety.
Currently, Songpa-gu operates Songpa Nanum Power Plants No. 1 in Goheung, Jeollanam-do; No. 2 in Uiseong, Gyeongsangbuk-do; and No. 3 and No. 4 at Songpa Resource Circulation Park, producing a total of 17.8 million kWh of electricity as of the end of 2019.
Dividing this by the annual electricity consumption per household in Seoul, which is 3,306 kWh, it is equivalent to producing electricity for 5,384 households for one year.
The power revenue generated has been used to create an energy poverty support fund (Climate Change Fund), providing approximately 780 million KRW in energy cost payments, replacement of old home appliances, and high-efficiency LED lamp replacement projects for 4,580 households and 61 locations within the region.
Additionally, renewable energy installation projects worth 140 million KRW have been carried out at 11 overseas sites (including Mongolia and Vietnam), receiving local acclaim.

Park Seong-su, Mayor of Songpa-gu, stated, “If one pine tree reduces 5 kgCO2 of carbon dioxide annually, then over about 10 years of operating the Nanum power plants, we have reduced 7,626 tons of CO2, which is equivalent to planting approximately 1.52 million pine trees. We will continue to actively implement policies to expand renewable energy and realize energy welfare.”
