Opened in October 2017, the Seoul Korean Medicine Promotion Center goes beyond the role of a Korean Medicine Museum. It is a complex cultural experience facility for Korean medicine designed to widely promote the excellence and safety of K-Medi through diverse and specialized exhibitions, education, and hands-on experiences, making Korean medicine culture easily accessible to everyone.
To become a symbolic facility of Dongdaemun-gu, the Seoul Korean Medicine Promotion Center has strengthened its professional staff and actively promoted key programs such as the ‘Korean Medicine Museum Exhibition,’ ‘Healing Foot Bath,’ and ‘Boje-won Korean Medicine Experience.’ It has also hosted cultural events and festivals in the Yakryeongsi street, including the ‘Prima Market Hanbang-e Noljang,’ ‘Itda Market,’ and ‘Hanbang-ga,’ as well as distinctive Korean medicine education programs like the ‘Herbal Medicine Specialist Course,’ ‘Afternoon Hanbang Chat,’ and ‘Herbal Medicine University.’
As a result, the center has been recognized for its efforts by winning awards such as the Presidential Award at the 2018 National Land Grand Prize and the Korean Medicine Flea Market Manifesto in 2019. This year, the museum, the core facility of the center, was honored as an excellent certified institution by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
Recently, amid the challenges posed by social distancing due to COVID-19, the Seoul Korean Medicine Promotion Center turned the crisis into an opportunity by shifting to an untact (contactless) operation method and continues to actively manage the center.
They have expanded online content through their YouTube channel, conducted online non-face-to-face education using pre-sent educational kits, implemented outreach education programs visiting schools directly, and offered online exhibitions through their website, showcasing various Korean medicine contents as new operational methods to overcome COVID-19.
Additionally, to revitalize the Seoul Yakryeongsi area where the center is located, they are running a Seoul Yakryeongsi store support project and planning educational programs for market merchants as well as Korean medicine street festivals and events in Yakryeongsi.
Yoo Deok-yeol, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “The Seoul Korean Medicine Promotion Center, a landmark of Dongdaemun-gu, will continue to grow as a cultural facility with great potential, promoting the excellence of K-Medi both online and offline and contributing to the popularization of Korean medicine. We will play a pivotal role in being recognized as a hub for the Korean medicine industry together with Seoul Yakryeongsi.”
The Seoul Korean Medicine Promotion Center (Seoul Yakryeongsi Korean Medicine Museum), which was closed due to COVID-19, reopened on July 22 and is operating various Korean medicine experiences such as museum tours, herbal foot baths for summer health promotion, meridian acupressure, and Korean herbal tea tasting.
