Gyeongbuk Province Launches Committee to Attract Medical School to POSTECH in Pohang
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] On the 12th, Gyeongbuk Province and Pohang City held the launch ceremony of the 'Pohang Medical School Attraction Promotion Committee' at the Pohang City Hall main conference room, embodying the wishes of 2.7 million Gyeongbuk residents, and officially began their activities.
At the launch ceremony, Governor Lee Cheol-woo, Pohang Mayor Lee Kang-deok, and POSTECH President Kim Moo-hwan served as co-chairmen, while local National Assembly members Kim Jung-jae (Pohang North) and Kim Byung-wook (Pohang South·Ulleung) were appointed as advisory committee members. Former Vice Minister of Health and Welfare Son Geon-ik, along with Lee Dong-wook, Bae Byung-jun, and Sung Sam-je, who held key positions in the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Ministry of Education, also participated as committee members.
Leading domestic bio companies such as POSCO, Hanmi Science (CEO Lim Jong-yoon), and Genexine (Chairman Sung Young-chul), as well as various institutions including the Daegu-Gyeongbuk Medical Innovation Foundation (Chairman Lee Young-ho), Korea Brain Research Institute (Director Seo Pan-gil), and International Vaccine Institute (Deputy Secretary-General Song Man-gi), are participating to support the attraction of the Pohang Medical School.
The launch ceremony proceeded with POSTECH’s report on the medical school attraction promotion plan, signing of a joint agreement on the establishment of the medical school, and a comprehensive discussion to explore ways to activate the promotion committee and foster cooperation.
On this day, POSTECH announced its position to lead the resolution of regional medical disparities and innovation of the public medical support system by focusing on a public healthcare-centered research medical school and smart hospital as the basic direction, and by playing a role as a medical institution responding to new infectious diseases.
Governor Lee Cheol-woo stated, "We will do our best to lead regional development through the attraction of a medical school in the province," and added, "I will take the lead to ensure the success of attracting the Pohang Medical School, which is the earnest wish of the residents."

Mayor Lee Kang-deok pledged, "Amid the current situation where government health and medical policies such as increasing medical school quotas and operating regional doctor systems are being concretized, we will unite our capabilities to actively strive for the attraction of the Pohang Medical School."
