China Continues to Pressure Taiwan
[Asia Economy Beijing=Special Correspondent Jo Young-shin] Wu Zhaoxie, Taiwan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, said on the 11th, "China is continuously pressuring Taiwan to accept political conditions that would turn Taiwan into another Hong Kong."
On the same day, Minister Wu held a joint press conference with Alex Azar, the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, who is the highest-ranking U.S. official to visit Taiwan since diplomatic ties were severed in 1979. According to Taiwan media Liberty Times, he stated, "(Due to China's pressure) Taiwan's situation is becoming increasingly difficult day by day."
Minister Wu said, "Warm friends like the United States and Secretary Azar firmly support the fight for Taiwan to gain more international space," adding, "This is not simply an issue related to Taiwan's status, but a fight to protect democratic institutions." He emphasized, "Taiwan must win for democracy to exist forever."
He also said, "The United States and Taiwan share much as close partners in a free and open Indo-Pacific region."
Regarding Taiwan's achievements in COVID-19 prevention, he targeted China by stating, "Under Taiwan's transparent model, the government cannot lie or conceal information."

Secretary Azar responded, "Taiwan is a global model for COVID-19 prevention," adding, "The United States is very proud of Taiwan's achievements and continues to advocate for Taiwan's contributions to the world on important agendas such as health."
