The Screen Monopoly Criterion Is a 50% Share of Screening Frequency
KOFIC Launches Fair Traffic Light Service on Integrated Cinema Ticketing System
"Will Enable Verification of Actual Screening Opportunity Concentration"
The Korean Film Council has set the screen monopoly criterion at a screening share of 50% or more. Starting today (the 10th), the Fair Traffic Light service applied to the Integrated Computer Network for Movie Theater Tickets will display a red light for the corresponding film.
The Fair Traffic Light service is a selective measure introduced to prevent screening opportunities from being concentrated on specific films. After calculating the daily concentration of screening opportunities, a yellow light is shown if the screening share exceeds 40%, and a red light if it exceeds 50%. A KOFIC official stated, “This is a continuous monitoring activity aimed at improving issues caused by some blockbuster films monopolizing the movie market and creating a fair competition environment,” adding, “It can be checked under the ‘Fair Traffic Light’ section at the bottom of the box office menu.”

Previously, the screen monopoly criterion was based on screen ratio. However, since no precise standard was specified and the number of screenings per screen varied, there were opinions that it was inefficient. Accordingly, KOFIC presented a clear standard of a 50% screening share. The official said, “This will allow us to verify the actual concentration of screening opportunities,” and added, “We hope this will foster a desirable movie screening environment where various films coexist harmoniously.”
