'Aladdin' Surpasses 'Assassination' to Rank 12th in All-Time Box Office
The theater industry, which had been struggling due to the spread of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19), has finally regained some vitality. Thanks to the success of "Deliver Us from Evil," more than 1.8 million people gathered over the past weekend (August 7-9).
According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticket sales system on the 10th, the number of moviegoers who visited theaters last weekend was 1,805,292. This is 726,020 more than the first weekend of this month (July 31-August 2), which had 1,079,272 visitors.
"Deliver Us from Evil" led the revival. It attracted 1,389,520 viewers across 1,997 screens (32,356 showings). Among movies with over 10,000 seats secured, it recorded the highest seat occupancy rate (24.9%) and a box office share of 77.9%. It surpassed 2 million cumulative viewers in just five days after its release, reaching 2,025,040. Distributor CJ Entertainment stated, "If calculated by date, the box office trend is comparable to this year's top hit 'The Man Standing Next' (cumulative audience of 4,750,104)."
"Steel Rain 2: Summit" attracted 203,620 viewers across 1,016 screens (10,811 showings). This is a 69.3% (459,171) decrease compared to the first weekend of this month, which had 662,791 viewers. The number of seats decreased from 4,871,383 to 1,497,697, but the occupancy rate (13.6%) did not increase. Its box office share was 10.9%, with a cumulative audience of 1,542,394.
"Peninsula," in its fourth week since release, drew 99,656 viewers across 639 screens (4,867 showings). This is a 67.1% (203,614) decrease compared to the first weekend of this month, which had 303,270 viewers. The seat occupancy rate was 16.9%, ranking fourth among movies with over 10,000 seats secured. Its box office share was 5.5%, with a cumulative audience of 3,693,324.

"Aladdin" surpassed "Assassination" (cumulative 12,705,700 viewers) to rank 12th in the all-time box office chart.
