57 Yangcheon-gu Scholarship Students Selected in 2020... Supporting Dreams and Talent Development
A Total of 57 Selected, 37.35 Million KRW Scholarship to Be Awarded
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Yangcheon-gu (Mayor Kim Soo-young) is recruiting the '2020 Yangcheon-gu Scholarship Students' from August 24 to September 4 to nurture future talents.
A total of 57 students will be selected in three categories: ▲General Scholarship Students (high school and university students) ▲Academic Excellence Scholarship Students (high school students) ▲Special Talent Scholarship Students (elementary, middle, and high school students), with a total scholarship amount of 37.35 million KRW to be awarded.
Applicants must have resided in Yangcheon-gu for more than one year as of the announcement date (August 10, 2020) and meet the eligibility criteria for each scholarship category, including elementary, middle, high school, and university students.
The eligibility criteria for each scholarship are as follows: ▲General Scholarship Students (household income within 90% of the median income, university students must be within the 4th income quintile according to the Korea Student Aid Foundation) ▲Academic Excellence Scholarship Students (average grade rank of 2.75 or better in each subject from the previous semester) ▲Special Talent Scholarship Students (winners within the top 3 in national-level competitions hosted or organized by the government, metropolitan city/provincial governments, or nationwide superintendents and education offices in the fields of arts, sports, or science (mathematics); if no candidate exists at the school level, then winners ranked 1st at the metropolitan city/provincial level). Students or parents wishing to apply for the scholarship should submit their applications by September 4 to the local community service center in their residential district (for General Scholarships) or to their current school (for Academic Excellence and Special Talent Scholarships). Students attending schools outside Yangcheon-gu applying for Academic Excellence or Special Talent Scholarships must obtain a recommendation letter from their school principal and submit their application to the local community service center in their residential district.
The scholarship recipients will be selected through the Scholarship Fund Management Deliberation Committee and announced in October. The support amount per student is 300,000 KRW for elementary, middle, and high school students, 600,000 KRW for high school students, and between 500,000 and 1,500,000 KRW for university students. However, applicants who have received or are scheduled to receive scholarships from the national government, other local governments, or private organizations this year will be excluded from selection.
Yangcheon-gu has established a scholarship fund to provide equal educational opportunities and improve academic abilities, implementing the scholarship program since 2017. Up to 2019, a total of 93 students have received scholarships amounting to 55.3 million KRW.

Kim Soo-young, Mayor of Yangcheon-gu, stated, “Despite the economic downturn caused by COVID-19, we hope this scholarship will help students overcome difficulties and take a step forward toward their dreams and talents,” adding, “We hope students grow up to be a strong hope for the local community.”
