KOICA Donates 'Global Citizenship Education Series' to 6 Local Children's Centers
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] KOICA (Korea International Cooperation Agency) Yeongwol Global Talent Education Center is conducting an educational donation activity by running the ‘Global Citizenship Education Series’ program for six local children’s centers located in Jecheon.
The ‘Global Citizenship Education Series’ is a customized and experiential education program designed to support future generations in becoming global citizens who are interested in various global issues and actively take action to solve them. It consists of four basic education modules and eight SDGs education programs.
The basic education includes understanding the basics of global citizenship, understanding other cultures, understanding international development cooperation, and an introduction to WFK (the integrated brand of overseas volunteer groups dispatched by the Korean government). The SDGs education covers various global issues such as hunger, gender equality, water and sanitation, energy, human rights, climate change, terrestrial ecosystem protection, and peace.
Global citizenship education instructors, composed of KOICA and CoWorks employees, will visit six children’s centers in Jecheon from August to early September during the summer vacation period to provide the program in 17 sessions to a total of about 400 elementary school students. In addition, they plan to actively continue various educational donation activities for local children, youth, and marginalized groups, including nearby children’s centers and multicultural family support centers.
The Yeongwol Education Center has consistently supported free visiting education services within Gangwon Province, where access to development cooperation information and global citizenship education opportunities are limited compared to the metropolitan area, contributing to reducing regional educational disparities. The ‘Visiting Global Citizenship Free Education’ program, conducted by the education center since 2016, was recognized for its contribution to the culture of educational donation and received the ‘8th Korea Education Donation Award’ in 2019.
KOICA Yeongwol Global Talent Education Center is responsible for domestic education of KOICA volunteer groups dispatched to developing countries. Since its opening in Yeongwol County, Gangwon Province in 2015, it has provided education to approximately 2,980 prospective volunteers. Additionally, to promote mutual growth with the Gangwon region where the center is located, it has engaged in activities such as mask distribution, quarantine efforts, and delivering meals to marginalized groups. Recently, it also received an award from the Governor of Gangwon Province for contributions to COVID-19 response and preventing community spread.
