On the same day, Deputy Prime Minister for Economy Hong Nam-ki announced the 'Housing Supply Plan for the Seoul Metropolitan Area, etc.' at a joint briefing held at the Government Seoul Office, which includes △ the introduction of a public reconstruction system △ the discovery and expansion of new sites such as Taereung Golf Course in Nowon-gu, Seoul, and the additional supply of a total of 122,000 housing units in the metropolitan area.
In addition to Taereung Golf Course, the plan is to build 4,000 apartment units on idle land around the Government Gwacheon Complex to supply to young people and newlyweds.
However, Gwacheon City, which had been planning to create a high-tech industrial complex on the idle land, immediately opposed this plan.
Mayor Kim Jong-cheon of Gwacheon City said at an emergency briefing, "Supplying 4,000 large-scale apartment units on the idle land of the complex, the only space where Gwacheon citizens can breathe, is an unbearable burden for the citizens and the city," and "We strongly demand the exclusion of the Government Gwacheon Complex and its idle land from the government's housing supply plan."
This idle land is government-owned and spans 89,000㎡. It is currently used as a park, sports ground, and parking lot for citizens.
Mayor Kim pointed out, "The idea of supplying housing on the idle land of the Government Gwacheon Complex is to use Gwacheon merely as a means of housing supply to curb housing prices in Gangnam."
