[Breaking] Central Region Dams Flood Control 'Emergency'..."If Not Emptied in Advance, Bigger Trouble Awaits"
Lowered by 300mm and Typhoon Approaching... "If Not Emptied in Advance, It Could Be Worse"
[Asia Economy Reporter Heo Midam] Following a deluge exceeding 300mm in the central region, up to 300mm of heavy rain is forecast by tomorrow, prompting emergency water level control measures at dams in the Han River basin.
With continuous heavy rainfall causing dam water levels in the central region to rise steadily, preemptive measures have been taken, including gradually increasing discharge volumes, to prevent greater damage from Typhoon Hagupit, the 4th typhoon moving northward toward the Korean Peninsula.
According to the Korea Water Resources Corporation and the Han River Flood Control Office on the 5th, dams in the Bukhan River basin such as Chuncheon Dam, Uiam Dam, and Cheongpyeong Dam began discharging water through sluice gates starting from the 2nd. This is the first sluice gate discharge this year.

A Han River Flood Control Office official stated, "Due to continuous heavy rain and in preparation for the approaching Typhoon Hagupit, we have no choice but to increase sluice gate discharge at dams in the Han River basin. Although this may cause more traffic control sections due to flooding on riverside roads in Seoul and the metropolitan area, causing inconvenience, we ask for cooperation with the controls for safety."
