Insurance Agent Continues Fraudulent Activities While on Trial for Insurance Fraud, Sentenced to 2 Years in Prison
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] An insurance planner who continued to commit insurance fraud while on trial for insurance fraud charges has been sentenced to prison.
Judge Kim Yeon-kyung of the Seoul Southern District Court Criminal Division 10 announced on the 3rd that Kim (56), who was indicted on fraud charges, was sentenced to two years in prison.
Kim was charged with fraudulently receiving a total of about 155 million won in insurance money by submitting false documents to the insurance company, pretending to have been hospitalized 56 times from August 2016 to the end of April last year.
During the hospitalization periods, Kim did not actually stay in the hospital but only received outpatient treatment or visited several provinces, continuing daily life. During the hospitalization periods, Kim conducted insurance planner sales, securing about 40 insurance contracts, and even went on an overseas trip on the day of discharge.
Previously, Kim was accused and investigated for another insurance fraud case in August 2016. At that time, Kim was found guilty of embezzling about 260 million won and was sentenced to one year and eight months in prison by the Seoul Southern District Court in July last year, which was finalized.
Judge Kim stated, "The defendant, who should strive for the establishment and maintenance of a sound insurance system as an insurance planner, committed crimes over a long period, and the damage has not been restored at all, which makes the nature of the crime very serious."
