A is suspected of sexually assaulting a female business owner at a restaurant in Buk-gu, Gwangju, in 2001 and fleeing the scene.
The police arrested A after receiving notification from the prosecution, which is conducting a DNA comparison for violent crimes, that A's DNA matched the DNA detected in the sexual assault case.
The investigative agency had collected and stored A's DNA while he was imprisoned for other sexual crimes. It is reported that A committed multiple sexual offenses in the past and was imprisoned for 7 years and 6 months before being released in 2013.
The police stated that in cases with scientific evidence proving the crime, the statute of limitations is extended by 10 years.
