Installation of Pedestrian Deck on Steep Slope at Geumdong Elementary School, Geumcheon-gu
Geumcheon-gu Signs Agreement to Promote Project for Mobility Facilities at Geumdong Elementary School... Elevator and Pedestrian Deck Installation in Steep Sections of Geumdong Elementary School
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Geumcheon-gu (Mayor Yu Seong-hoon) signed an agreement on the 29th with the Southern Education Support Office (Director Kim Jae-hwan) and Seoul Geumdong Elementary School (Principal Lee Young-ja) to join forces to improve mobility convenience for residents in the hilly area within Geumdong Elementary School.
According to the agreement, a vertical elevator and pedestrian deck will be installed in the steep slope section within Geumdong Elementary School, which is expected to greatly improve the mobility convenience for local residents who have been traveling along the steep slopes within the school to and from their residences.
The signing ceremony was attended by Yu Seong-hoon, Mayor of Geumcheon-gu, Kim Jae-hwan, Director of the Southern Education Support Office, Lee Young-ja, Principal of Geumdong Elementary School, as well as about 20 related residents including members of Siheung Golttubeogi and representatives of the Buksan 5 Complex Residents’ Association.
Through this agreement, the three organizations agreed to actively cooperate in ‘resolving inconvenience in local residents’ passage,’ ‘improving mobility convenience for transportation-vulnerable groups,’ and ‘creating a safe educational environment.’
Geumdong Elementary School is located in the middle of residential areas such as Gwanaksan Buksan Town Apartments Complex 5 and 6 in Siheung 2-dong, Geumcheon-gu. However, because the residential area was developed on a hillside, students and residents have experienced inconvenience in having to either take a long detour via Geumha-ro, a road outside the complex, or use the steep slopes within the school to access nearby facilities such as the school or the community center.
In response, since last year, the district has been raising awareness of the issue centered on the Geumdong Elementary School parents’ group ‘Siheung Gol Ttubugi,’ discovered through the Geumcheon 1st Street Living Lab project, and has been seeking improvement measures with related departments and institutions. A breakthrough was found in Seoul City’s ‘Hilly Area Mobility Improvement Project.’
After the ‘Siheung 2-dong Geumdong Elementary School Mobility Improvement Project’ was selected in a public contest last April, the district has been coordinating detailed matters for project promotion such as school site usage and facility installation plans with the Southern Education Support Office and Geumdong Elementary School. Once Seoul City’s basic plan is completed, the district plans to proceed with basic and detailed designs from September and accelerate the project aiming for completion in 2021.
