[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism announced on the 29th that it will promote the 'New Southern Sliding Sports (Bobsleigh and Skeleton) Champion Development Project' to support bobsleigh and skeleton athletes from New Southern countries to participate in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, in collaboration with Gangwon Province and the 2018 Pyeongchang Foundation.
Since March, the Foundation has been discussing participation with countries among the New Southern nations that have not participated in the Winter Olympics but have established winter sports federations, ultimately selecting four countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Thailand.
Currently, in cooperation with the respective National Olympic Committees, 14 athletes are being selected through online interviews, including 7 female athletes. Twelve athletes from Vietnam, Cambodia, and Malaysia have been selected, and two athletes from Thailand will be selected by early August to finalize the participants.
