"Jang Dae-ho's Supreme Court Verdict Today in the 'Hangang Torso Murder Case'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The Supreme Court verdict for Jang Dae-ho, who was arrested and indicted in the so-called 'Hangang Torso Corpse Case,' will be delivered on the 29th.
The Supreme Court's First Division (Presiding Justice Kwon Soon-il) will hold the final appeal hearing for Jang, who was tried on murder charges, at 10:10 a.m. that day. Jang Dae-ho is accused of killing a guest at the motel where he worked by striking him with a blunt weapon, then dismembering the body with a knife and dumping it into the Hangang River last August. He told the police that he committed the crime because the victim spoke to him informally in a confrontational manner and refused to pay the 40,000 won lodging fee.

The investigation began last August when a naked male torso without a head or limbs was found near the southern end of the Magok railway bridge over the Hangang River in Goyang City, Gyeonggi Province. Jang said, "I did not kill for personal gain, so I do not want to ask the bereaved family for forgiveness, and I am okay with receiving the death penalty," which sparked public outrage. The prosecution stated, "The defendant shows no remorse or conscience. It is very dangerous to reintegrate him into society," and sought the death penalty in both the first and second trials. Both the first and second trials sentenced Jang to life imprisonment, stating that "permanently isolating Jang from society is an appropriate punishment."
