President Moon: "Korean Researchers Sustain 100 Million Degree Ultra-High Temperature Plasma for World-Longest 8 Seconds"
Celebration Video for the Start of Assembly of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor Device... "If the World Unites Wisdom, the 'Artificial Sun' Will Brighten Humanity's Future"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] "Korean researchers have succeeded in maintaining ultra-high-temperature plasma reaching 100 million degrees Celsius for 8 seconds. This is the longest record in the world. A vacuum vessel that can withstand ultra-high temperatures is essential for nuclear fusion. Korean industries have developed this over more than 10 years, and it is soon expected to arrive at the ITER construction site."
President Moon Jae-in said this in a video message sent on the 28th to commemorate the start of assembly of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Cadarache, France.
According to the Blue House, the event, which introduced the current status of ITER construction and future assembly plans, was conducted via real-time remote connection with each member country and was broadcast live worldwide on YouTube. President Moon conveyed congratulations through the video message, and top officials from member countries, including French President Macron, offered encouragement through video and written messages.
ITER, which underwent more than 10 years of design and began construction in 2007, is the longest and largest project in human history to be experimented and operated until around 2040 after completion. President Moon said, "We dreamed of ‘future energy’ to protect the Earth, and our dream gave birth to ITER, the largest international science and technology project in history where the world is jointly creating nuclear fusion ‘artificial sun’."
President Moon said, "Today is a joyful day marking the start of assembly of the international nuclear fusion experimental reactor ‘ITER’," and evaluated, "As climate and environmental protection become more important due to COVID-19, ‘ITER’ and the project teams of each country are giving hope to humanity."
‘ITER’ means ‘the way’ in Latin. President Moon attributed significance to Korea’s contribution to this project. He said, "We are now very proud to be working with the world through science. By producing key components, we can take one step closer to ‘our way,’ and the Korean people are also very pleased."
President Moon said, "The ‘artificial sun’ is the energy of dreams. It can be produced almost infinitely using seawater, and it is clean energy with no radioactive risk or greenhouse gas emissions," adding, "We will support more participation of Korea’s excellent scientists and engineers in ‘ITER.’ By 2050, we will work with the international community to realize ‘clean and safe nuclear fusion energy.’"
