LG Uplus announced on the 28th that it will pilot smart kennels and catteries at the Dobom Center, a companion animal welfare center in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, in collaboration with the animal rights organization 'Animal Rights Action Kara.'
The smart kennels and catteries will be equipped with LG Uplus's AI-based pet services, including ▲AI Mom Cam (CCTV) ▲Snack Robot ▲Remote-controlled Mood Light as part of the 'U+ Smart Home Pet Care' system to aid in the care of abandoned animals. This service will also be provided free of charge to families adopting abandoned animals.
The AI Mom Cam allows continuous monitoring of animals that require ongoing observation due to illness, disability, or abnormal behavior, or those recently admitted to the center to check their adaptation status. It is also convenient for monitoring pets' water intake and drinking frequency to assess their health condition.
The Snack Robot can be controlled directly via a mobile app to play with pets, and it can be set to entertain or feed snacks when pets are alone. The enjoyable moments can be viewed through the AI Mom Cam or recorded on video.
The Mood Light service enables owners to turn on soft lighting and music remotely via a smartphone app to help calm their pets. Starting in September, dedicated music that aids pet relaxation will be added.
Ryu Chang-soo, Executive Director of LG Uplus Home Product Group, said, "The U+ Smart Home Pet Care package can create a safe adoption environment for families hesitant to adopt due to reasons such as leaving pets alone at home during work hours."
According to the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, in 2019, there were 797,081 newly registered pets (registration is mandatory only for dogs), while lost and abandoned animals totaled 135,791.

Jeon Jin-kyung, Executive Director of Animal Rights Action Kara, emphasized, "The AI Mom Cam will be useful for certain animals requiring intensive observation, such as newly admitted or sick animals. As the pet-owning population increases, the number of abandoned animals is also rapidly rising, so active support from ICT companies is necessary to promote shelter adoptions."
